Stuttgart, September 2015 – Emotionalism and sophisticated technology are two attributes of motorsport that underscore MAHLE’s decades of commitment in the main national and international racing series. Nowhere else are powertrain components and systems subjected to such challenging loads. The wide variety and extreme boundary conditions of motorsport are thus often the driving force behind new MAHLE developments for large-scale production, as demonstrated by an innovative combustion process.

MAHLE Jet Ignition® is a lean burn combustion process, developed by our engineering service provider MAHLE Powertrain for the Formula 1. With substantially greater efficiency, it primarily delivers higher performance in motorsport. This is achieved by means of a special surface ignition of the fuel-air mixture. In series vehicles, this technology can be used to achieve markedly lower fuel consumption. With this combustion process, MAHLE sees the potential to reach efficiency levels in gasoline engines that are currently only achievable with diesel engines. MAHLE Jet Ignition® thus sets new benchmarks for gasoline engines.

The fact that MAHLE’s developments for racing applications often find their way later in series vehicles was recently illustrated by steel pistons. In recent years, these led five times to victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and since 2014, they have been fitted in Renault passenger car diesel engines—a worldwide premiere.

Greater driving pleasure with lower fuel consumption and emissions—this is what drives MAHLE to maintain its commitment to motorsport. This is why the partnership with Scuderia Ferrari, for whom MAHLE Motorsports has been developing and producing engine components for many years, is currently being expanded.
